Pluto is mostly made up of rock and ice. The mantle, or the part of the planet sandwiched between the crust and the core, is made up of water ice. Scientists believe that over eons of time the rock and ice separated due to the decay of radioactive minerals, and plunging the rock to the core of the planet. The surface of Pluto is beleived to be mostly frozen Nitrogen from the specroscopic analysis that has been done. The atmosphere is made up of a thin envelope of Nitrogen, Methane and Carbon Dioxide. The surface temperature is about -230 celcius, or -446 fahrenheit (better put you winter coat and gloves on!
Scientists will have a better understanding of the planet's surface and composition when New Horizons arrives in 2015.
